German residents have become more critical of Russia

The Germans have become more critical of Russia and consider it one of the main challenges to German foreign policy.

According to a survey conducted by the Kantar Public Institute for the Study of Public Opinion by order of the Curber Foundation, 27% of Germans called relations with the Russian Federation the most serious challenge for Germany.

As Fund experts noted, it is possible that the opinion of German residents was influenced by the situation in Belarus and the incident with Russian blogger Alexei Navalny. Last year, in a similar survey, only 6% of German citizens considered Russia the most important challenge for the country.

37% of respondents called migration the most serious problem for German foreign policy. 25% of respondents consider relations with the United States a challenge to Germany, and 14% consider the coronavirus pandemic. In 2019, the problem of climate change was the leader, which fell into the background this year, only 8% of the study participants remembered it.

Among the most important partners of Germany in the world, the Germans named France (43%), the USA (23%), China (7%) and Russia (5%).

The survey showed that the situation around the election of the American president undermined the confidence of Germans in democracy in the States. This was reported by 35% of respondents.

78% of respondents hope that under the new US administration, transatlantic relations will normalize.

The survey involved 1005 Germans who reached the age of 18, in September, and 1058 - in November.
