The Russian Foreign Ministry said that four years ago, Brazil asked Russia to change the order of the BRICS presidencies as an exception. The reason for this was Brazil's plans to lead the G20 in 2024, the ministry said in a conversation with RIA Novosti.

The Russian Foreign Ministry added that Brazil suggested that Russia should take over in 2024, and a year later Brazil will chair the BRICS.

"Of course, we responded positively to the request of Brazilian partners," the foreign ministry stressed.

The other BRICS members supported the agreement of the two countries, and it was secured by an exchange of diplomatic notes.

BRICS unites Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Other countries, including Argentina and Iran, also want to join the economic forum.
