NATO plans to build space center in Germany

Defense ministers of the member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance will announce plans to build a new space center at the German Ramstein air base on Thursday.

According to Sueddeutsche Zeitung, on October 22, NATO will announce plans to build a space center at the Ramstein aviation base, located in Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany.

The newspaper notes that the center will primarily serve as a "focal point for observing outer space." Moreover, in the future, this object can be converted into a center for the adoption of defense measures.

DPA agencies, the Alliance also plans to create a "think tank," the work of which will be aimed at exploring space activities. NATO is considering the possibility of creating an expert center also in Germany in Calcara or in French Toulouse.

In June 2019, the member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance approved the first concept of space policy in the history of the organization. Then NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized that we are not talking about the militarization of space.
