The European Union has terminated the sanctions against Syria. This was announced by the head of the European diplomatic service, Kaja Kallas.
The decision was taken at the EU Council meeting held in Brussels. As Callas noted, Europe's goal is to “assist the Syrian people in building a renewed, unifying and peaceful Syria”.
Earlier, a similar decision to lift sanctions on Syria was made by the United States.
According to Al Jazeera TV channel, the lifting of Syria sanctions by the European Union indicates that the EU “effectively recognizes the currently existing Syrian government.”
The termination of sanctions is a necessary step to ensure financial sustainability and improve the living standards of the population of Syria,” the TV channel said in its publication.
