Draft resolution on non-recognition of Putin as president after 2024 submitted to the US Congress

A draft resolution has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives that would not recognize Russian President Vladimir Putin as a legitimate head of state beginning in 2024. The resolution will be considered if Vladimir Putin runs for president.

The authors of the resolution are Steve Cohen and Joe Wilson. If the document is adopted, it will be advisory in nature.

The text of the document says that Vladimir Putin "is in power due to election violations. His continued stay in power is illegal, and the resolution also states that the amendments to the Russian Constitution violate the law and the country's international obligations.

"Any attempts by Vladimir Putin to remain in office after the end of his current and last presidential term after May 7, 2024 should entail complete non-recognition by the United States," the text of the resolution says.

Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev said that the proposed resolution is "pure interference in the internal affairs of Russia". "It's a little early for the Americans to interfere in Russia's affairs," Konstantin Kosachev added.
