A bipartisan group of U.S. senators travelled to Budapest with the intention of forcing the Hungarian government to immediately ratify Sweden's application for NATO membership. However, none of the members of the Hungarian government expressed any desire to meet with the politicians.

The Americans hoped for concessions to the last. Senator Thom Tillis' speech at a press conference at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest speaks to this.

"The agreement of Hungary and your prime minister will do a great favour to freedom-loving countries around the world," the senator said.

However, there was no miracle, as Congressmen Jeanne Shaheen and Chris Murphy acknowledged. The senators expressed disappointment with this action of the Hungarian leadership and characterised its position as "strange and disturbing".

Recall, Hungary remains the only country out of 31 NATO members, still has not approved the application of Sweden to join the bloc. Earlier, the US President's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that the patience of the United States is not unlimited. Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto responded that Budapest was a sovereign country and did not need US instructions.
