Japanese authorities want to sign a peace treaty with Russia so as not to leave the problem for future generations

The Japanese government does not want to drag out the issue of concluding a peace treaty with Russia, said the Secretary General of the Cabinet of Ministers Hirokazu Matsuno.

According to him, the authorities are striving to sign a peace treaty with Russia, solving the problem of the ownership of the four northern islands in order to finally solve it.

Matsuno stressed that the government plans to negotiate on the basis of existing agreements, including the Soviet-Japanese declaration of 1956 and agreements that were reached in Singapore in 2018.

In November 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Singapore for the first time as part of the ASEAN summit, where he met with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. They agreed that the countries will intensify the negotiation process on the issue of the peace treaty.
