Pompeo responds to election of Russian Federation to UN human rights council

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called it right for the United States to withdraw from the UN Human Rights Council after Russia and several other countries were elected to the body.

According to Pompeo, the election of China, Russia and Cuba to the UN Human Rights Council confirms the correctness of the United States’ decision to withdraw from the council in 2018.

The Secretary of State noted on his Twitter page that the United States use other opportunities to protect and promote universal human rights.

The head of the State Department emphasized that America, within the framework of the UN General Assembly," identified and punished human rights violators in Xinjiang, Myanmar, Iran and other countries."

The fact that the Russian Federation was elected to the UN Human Rights Council became known on Tuesday, October 13. In addition to Russia, Bolivia, Britain, China, Côte d'Ivoire, Mexico, Malawi, Nepal, Pakistan, Senegal, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and France were elected to the council. All these states are elected to the council for three years since January 1, 2021.
