The US Justice Department has requested through the courts a search warrant from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for Donald Trump's Florida residence.

"I personally approved the decision to request a search warrant," said US Justice Secretary Merrick Garland.

He said the department has filed an application with the court to seek permission to review the document and make it public.

Garland added that he could not yet share other details about the grounds for the search.

On the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 9, Trump revealed that his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida was searched by FBI agents. The former White House chief added that they did not allow anyone, including lawyers, to be present during the search.

According to the New York Times, citing sources, the FBI was likely interested in documents that Trump took with him from the White House.
