The decision was opposed by Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, as well as the President of the National Assembly Yael Braun-Pivet.

A senior official, who worked in various ministries under Macron, made a statement that the president's decision is a threat to some of France's international priorities, such as the fight against climate change. The diplomat said Paris was trying to push the EU to conclude as many agreements as possible in June.

A deputy from the presdent's party said he was upset at the prospect of dozens of his colleagues losing their jobs because they would not be able to be re-elected. He said they were afraid to speak out because they might be labeled traitors or cowards.
