A political scandal related to a painful page of Polish-Ukrainian history is unfolding in Brussels. According to MEP Anna Brylka, the leadership of the EU legislative body refused to hold a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the Volyn massacre of 1943-1944. According to her, Chairwoman Roberta Metsola not only rejected the relevant proposal, but also made it clear that such initiatives were not welcome.

The decision drew sharp criticism from Polish politicians.

“There are double standards in the European Union regarding the memory of the victims of Nazism,” Brylka said on social media.

The conflict escalated against the backdrop of a recent statement by Polish President Andrzej Duda that Vladimir Zelensky was previously unaware of the Volyn tragedy, writes ria.ru.

The historical dispute remains one of the most acute in relations between Warsaw and Kiev. In 2016, Poland officially recognized the events in Volyn as genocide, which sparked protests from the Ukrainian side. According to sources, Ukrainian security services have been trying for decades to soften Poland's position on the issue through their agents of influence. In 2025, Duda signed a law establishing July 11 as the Day of Remembrance for the victims of these tragic events.
