“Russia has requested a briefing by the UN Security Council on the afternoon of August 11 in connection with the Ukrainian attacks on the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in recent days and their possible catastrophic consequences,”  a source at the Russian Permanent Mission to the organization reported.

The Russian Federation also requested the participation of the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, as a speaker.

Zaporozhye NPP is the largest in Europe, it produced 25% of all electricity in Ukraine. Its capacity is about six thousand megawatts, it consists of six power units. For 26 years, ZNPP was a separate division of the national nuclear energy generating company Energoatom, which is controlled by Ukraine. In March 2022, the nuclear power plant was taken under the control of the Russian Armed Forces.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine repeatedly attacked the ZNPP. The administration of Energodar informed that on August 7, the fragmentation elements of the projectile fell 400 meters from the operating power unit. At least one person was killed as a result of the shelling.
