The Russian Cabinet of Ministers headed by Mikhail Mishustin will resign on Tuesday, May 7.

This will happen immediately after the inauguration of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Mishustin's government was approved on January 21, 2020 after the resignation of the previous Cabinet, headed by Dmitry Medvedev.

This year, the government will be formed according to new rules, which were established by amendments to the Russian Constitution adopted four years ago. The head of the Cabinet must be appointed by the president after the State Duma approves the nominee. The Duma has 14 days to nominate a candidate, after which the lower house of the Russian parliament has another seven days to consider it.

In case of 3-fold rejection of candidates, the head of state himself appoints the prime minister, dissolves the State Duma and appoints new parliamentary elections.

Within a week after appointment, the new prime minister must submit to the president proposals on the structure of the federal executive bodies and within two weeks propose to the parliament for approval the candidacies of his deputies and ministers. The exception is the heads of the security bloc and the Foreign Ministry, for whom a special procedure applies. The State Duma makes a decision on the nominees within a week, and the persons approved by the Duma are appointed by the head of state.

The ministers of defense, interior, justice, foreign affairs, as well as the heads of the FSB and EMERCOM are appointed by the president after consultations with the Council of Ministers.

On the eve, Putin thanked the outgoing government for their joint work.
