Russian Ambassador to Brazil Alexei Labetsky stated that the United States is putting pressure on the Latin American country and persuading it to impose sanctions against Russia. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
The diplomat noted that it is perfectly visible. Labetsky noted that the United States are trying to convince the Brazilians that the anti-Russian restrictions are necessary. But so far nothing has been achieved, the diplomat said.
After the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said the Latin American country would not vote for a U.N. resolution that condemns Russian leader Vladimir Putin or proposes sanctions. Bolsonaro said in the summer that Western sanctions against Moscow had not worked.
Former Brazilian Foreign Minister and Defense Minister Celso Amorim said he, too, would not support restrictions against Russia if he were to lead the country again.
In July, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico signed a declaration refusing to support the U.S. position on Ukraine.
