Near Volokolamsk, in the Center for reproduction of rare species of animals in the Moscow Zoo, specialists have hatched a chick of the red-listed pink pelican, reports RG.

While the chick is very small, it weighs about 100 grams and remains in the incubator in which it hatched. On the fifth day of life, pink pelican chicks are covered in black down and their skin darkens considerably. After about a month, the chick will begin to have feathers.

Pink pelicans get their name because of the color of their plumage. Pink pelicans are included in the Red Book of Russia, as well as in the International Endangered Species List, because their numbers are declining. The staff of the Moscow zoo is working on creating a reserve population.
