The death toll from bridge collapse in India reached 130 people

The agency France Presse, citing the police in India, reports that the number of victims of the collapse of the suspension bridge on the Machhu dam near the town of Morbi reached 130 people.

And the number of drowned, according to the authorities, may increase. The search continues. Earlier it was reported that 91 people died.

"The death toll now stands at 130," the city's police chief, Rahul Tripathi, told the agency.

An equal number of others have been rescued.

The bridge has been under reconstruction for the past two years. The repairs were completed last week. And four days later on Sunday, about five hundred people gathered on the bridge while celebrating the Diwali holiday, the structure collapsed. More than 350 people were trapped in the water.

The 230-meter structure was built by the British in the 19th century.
