The baby was left alone at home without food or water for 10 days.
According to People, the perpetrator of the gruesome accident with a child was 32-year-old Kristel Candelario. The multi-day tragedy in the city of Cleveland, Ohio, began on 6 June 2023. On that day, the woman left her 1.5-year-old daughter for holidays in Chicago, Michigan and Puerto Rico.
The mother did not return home until 16 June 2023. By then, the toddler had died of critical dehydration. Authorities arrested the suspect on 17 June 2023.
"This is one of those truly unimaginable cases that will remain in my memory for years to come. (...) Today we spoke on behalf of 16-month-old Jaylin Candelario, who is no longer with us because of her mother's selfishness," said prosecutor Michael O'Malley.
The court will deliver its verdict on 18 March 2024. Under Ohio criminal law, the killer faces life in prison.
