Thus, Dallas received three months' worth of rainfall in a 24-hour period.
After extreme heat and drought, Dallas, the largest city in north Texas, received three months of rainfall. In just 24 hours, a heavy downpour flooded the city. Weather forecasters called the sudden change in weather a climate crisis.
The flooding forced city authorities to declare a state of emergency in Dallas. Water flooded the first floors of houses, roads and bridges. Cars were flooded up to their roofs, and in some places they were floating in torrents.
Rescuers evacuated people from vehicles that were rapidly going under water. One woman did not manage to get out of the car, being carried away by the violent stream. She died.
Other cities were hit by an equally horrific downpour. A state of emergency was declared in Fort Worth and Canton. Citizens were warned of waterlogging and flooding. Emergency services advised not to use personal vehicles and not to leave their homes.
Forecasters are predicting that heavy rains in northern Texas will continue through the end of the week.
