A homophobe with a penchant for extreme violence was found guilty of beating a man to death with a hammer in a darkened cemetery.

Eric Feld, 37, hid in the shadows behind a monument in east London and then pounced on Ranjit Kankanamalage early in the morning, an Old Bailey court hearing was held this week.

Mr. Kankanamalage, 50, was struck 12 times in the face and head with a hammer, causing injuries that led to his death.

Feld's defense argued that the defendant struck in self-defense after Kankanamalage molested him.

Sentencing was postponed to prepare a psychiatric report on the defendant, who suffered from a personality disorder.
