Malaysia's two helicopters collide killing 10 military personnel, investigation launched

The tragedy in the sky occurred during a parade rehearsal to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM).

According to The Star, two military helicopters were practicing maneuvers ahead of the aerial part of the parade. According to an analysis of photo and video footage, experts concluded that the air incident involved a collision between:

  • AgustaWestland AW139 medium multipurpose helicopter;
  • a light version of the Eurocopter Fennec helicopter.

There could have been 10 people on board the air vehicles. It is known that one helicopter went down near one of the entrances to the stadium of Lumut Air Base (western Perak state). Another helicopter crashed into the swimming pool of the sports complex of the same airbase.

The preliminary death toll from the helicopter crash is 10:

  • seven crew members were in the AgustaWestland AW139;
  • three crew members were in a Fennec.
  • Investigators sent the bodies of all the dead to a military hospital for identification procedures. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Earlier it became known that 2 military helicopters crashed in Japan.
