An Oklahoma justice has handed down a verdict of acquittal to 71-year-old Glynn Simmons.
According to the Associated Press, the man spent more than 48 years behind bars for the 1974 murder of Carolyn Sue Rogers, which he did not commit. Judge Amy Palumbo took into account that in the case there is irrefutable evidence of the innocence of the prisoner.
What is known is that the African-American was sentenced to capital punishment in 1975, which was commuted to life in prison in 1977.
Experts note that this is the longest term of imprisonment imposed by court error. Thus, Simmons spent 48 years, 1 month and 18 days in prison.
It is possible that the wrongfully convicted will demand compensation for moral damage in the amount of 175,000 dollars from the state authorities.
The man himself says that he has passed the lesson of fortitude and courage. Currently, the victim of arbitrariness of the American authorities is undergoing treatment for cancer and lives on benefits from a charitable foundation.
Earlier it became known that a resident of Omsk received a real sentence for attempted rape of the conductress on the train.
