The incident was registered in the state of Alabama.
According to People, 27-year-old Sarah Rachel James was picking up her child from school on 8 February 2024. On that day, her 7-year-old son distinguished himself by misbehaving. The mother decided to punish him. At around 3:30 p.m., the woman parked near the school and ordered the boy to walk the 8 blocks to their home on his own.
To do so, the child got out of the interior of the car and ran after the vehicle. At some point, the boy got bored with the punishment and wanted to get back into the car by reaching for the door handle. James pressed down on the accelerator pedal and allowed her son to run over. Fortunately, her son escaped with abrasions to his back and head.
"It was a miracle he wasn't hurt worse than he was. God was watching over that child that day," noted Police Chief Michael Abercrombie.
Authorities charged the woman with aggravated abuse of a minor. If convicted, the mother faces up to 20 years in prison. Sarah Rachel James is currently free on $50,000 bail.
Police also charged a second woman who was in the car at the time of the incident. For indifference to a dangerous situation, she was accused of endangering the welfare of a child.
