An earthquake was recorded in the waters of the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of the northern part of the Kuril Islands on Wednesday. The seismic event, according to specialists, was not felt on the territory of populated areas, and no tsunami threat was announced.
As reported in the seismic station “Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk”, the tremors were registered on July 16 at 20:03 local time (12:03 Moscow time). Epicenter of the earthquake was located 107 kilometers to the east from uninhabited Matua Island, which is a part of Kuril Ridge on the territory of Far Eastern Federal District. Magnitude of the seismic event made 5.2.
The origin of the earthquake was located at a relatively shallow depth of 16 kilometers. Despite this, operational data indicate that the residents of the nearest settlements in Russia did not feel the vibrations of the Earth's crust. In this regard, emergency services did not record appeals from citizens.
The head of the seismic station “Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk” Elena Semenova confirmed that the tsunami alarm was not declared in the region, as the characteristics of the earthquake did not create a threat of a destructive wave.
