Bortnikov: 78 terrorist attacks prevented in Russia in two years

At an international conference at the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, the director of the Russian Federal Security Service, Alexander Bortnikov, reported on the successful work of the agency under his control.

During his speech, Director of the FSB Alexander Bortnikov stated that currently there is increased terrorist activity practically in all regions of the planet. Over the past two years, 13,000 terrorist acts were committed around the world, claiming the lives of 20,000 people.

In the course of anti-terrorist work in Russia over the past two years, security services prevented 78 terrorist attacks. The work does not stop there.

To date, the country has expanded instruments for combating the financing of terrorism, it continues to work to pass legislation on the spread of false information about bomb threats and it introduces additional requirements for mobile phone operators.

Russia is willing to share the secrets of a nationwide system for combating terrorism with other countries, if necessary.

According to Bortnikov, extremists’ target is countries with weakened legitimate authorities. He also recalled the terrorists' desire to create so-called terrorist sleeper cells, which carry out spot attacks on the territories of states. Such terrorists have begun to use new types of encryption to communicate.

Bortnikov recalled the threat of double terrorist attacks - when, after the first bombing, terrorists wait for law enforcement officers to let their guard down and launch a second attack.
