Death toll in Equatorial Guinea bombing rises to 98

The death toll in a series of explosions at a military base in Equatorial Guinea has risen to 98.

According to local portal AhoraEg, citing a statement by Equatorial Guinea's Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, 98 people have been killed in four explosions at a military base in the city of Bata, while another 615 have been injured.

Earlier, 20 casualties and 400 injured were reported.

A series of powerful explosions in one of Equatorial Guinea's largest cities took place on Sunday, March 7. Residential houses near the military base were damaged or destroyed.

President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo said the explosions were caused by the "negligence" of soldiers and the carelessness of farmers who built fires near the army depots.

According to TVGE, special forces units and paramilitary gendarmerie were stationed at the military camp where the first explosion took place.
