Mass protests in the republic began on January 2, 2022. Then the residents of Zhanaozen and Aktau in the Mangistau region opposed a twofold increase in prices for liquefied petroleum gas, which is used as a vehicle fuel. The government was ready to cut prices, but the protests spread to other cities in Kazakhstan. For example, in Alma-Ata on January 4 and 5, clashes with security forces occurred, the police used gas and stun grenades. Throughout the country, the Internet was turned off, and a number of TV channels temporarily stopped broadcasting.
On January 5, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared a state of emergency throughout Kazakhstan for 14 days. On the same day, the head of state accepted the resignation of the government and headed the Security Council of the republic, removing from this post the first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev.
On the night of January 6, Tokayev held a meeting of the Security Council, at which he said that he had asked the CSTO for help "in overcoming the terrorist threat."
The government of Kazakhstan has introduced state regulation of prices for gasoline and diesel fuel for six months.
