An unidentified man opened fire on people who had come to the parade celebrating US Independence Day.
The Independence Day celebration in the United States was marred by tragedy as an unidentified man opened fire on people at a parade in the northern suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. Live on WGNTV, Nancy Rotering, mayor of Highland Park, where the incident occurred, reported the deaths of six people and injuries to more than twenty.
"Six people died, 24 are hospitalized," Rotering said.
The parade has been canceled. Police are searching for the shooter and believe he is still dangerous. The gunman is believed to be a white male, wearing a camouflage uniform and armed.
Traffic is completely blocked off in the parade area where the shooting took place. Citizens are urged to stay indoors.
The incident happened in Highland Park on the morning of June 4, minutes after the parade began. Shots were fired from the roof of one of the buildings. According to eyewitnesses, 20 to 50 shots were fired.
