In India, the first case of human infection with a fungal disease that only plants are susceptible to has been discovered. The disease was contracted by a mycologist from the Indian city of Kolkata, writes Science Direct.

The 61-year-old man went to doctors with symptoms that resembled the flu. The patient was constantly coughing, wheezing, experiencing difficulty swallowing and fatigue. According to the patient, he had been experiencing discomfort for three months.

After examining the patient, doctors found an abscess in his trachea, pus samples from which showed that the man was infected with a fungus called Chondrostereum purpureum.

This disease infects and destroys plants, causing silver leaf disease.

The man was treated with antifungal drugs. He was cured after two months.

Experts fear that the first case of human infection with the plant disease proves that global warming may open Pandora's box for new fungal diseases, accelerating their mutation and increasing their resistance to drugs.
