Indonesia is investigating the causes of death of 99 children due to acute kidney failure.
A total of 206 cases of renal failure in children in 20 Indonesian provinces have been reported since the beginning of the year. In 48% of cases the disease was fatal. It was not possible to determine the exact cause of the children's deaths. Presumably, the kidney problems could have been caused by children taking cough and fever syrups.
After checking 26 medications, the Indonesian Agency for Food and Drug Control identified five products with high ethylene glycol content. Now the Indonesian Ministry of Health has banned the sale of these drugs. Other medicines were also tested.
