A case of plague has been reported in the American state of New Mexico. Unfortunately, the man passed away.

State authorities noted that this is the first plague death in New Mexico since 2020.

"The New Mexico Department of Health reports that a Lincoln County man died as a result of contracting plague after being hospitalized with the disease," the agency said in a statement.

Plague is a severe disease. It runs a fever, affects internal organs, lymph nodes. In the past, the disease almost 100% ended with the death of the patient and mass epidemics. Now annually in the world the number of people who fall ill with plague is about 2.5 people. According to the WHO, the lethality today is 7%.

But if in medieval times they could not treat plague, in the modern world the disease is treated with antibiotics.

Recently in Germany they found the largest burial site of victims of plague epidemics in Europe.
