On Tuesday, September 6, India approved the locally developed Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use without needle and nasal administration, giving a boost to the domestic pharmaceutical industry, Le Monde reports.

The new vaccine was developed by Bharat Biotech, the manufacturer of another intravenous vaccine that was approved by the World Health Organization last November.

India's drug regulator issued an emergency approval Tuesday for the new drug, which will allow it to be used as a primary dose by any unvaccinated or partially vaccinated adults, but not as a revaccination. "This step will further strengthen our collective fight against the pandemic," Health Minister Mansukh Mandavia said on Twitter.
