WHO said that the number of infections of newborns with echovirus-11 is growing in six European countries. These are the UK, Spain, Italy, France, Croatia, Spain, and Sweden, La Razón newspaper reported. In May alone, seven children died of severe sepsis caused by E-11 in France.

In total, the number of E-11 infections among infants, compared to other infections, rose from 6.2% to 55% between 2016 and 2022, according to WHO. This increase in incidence and complications among newborns is considered atypical.

As a result, WHO recommended countries to report new cases of E-11 infections to the organizations, and in case of suspected infection - to test for enteroviruses, observing all precautions when collecting samples.

Earlier, the Ministry of Health authorized the use of "Sodium iodide, 131 I" in the treatment of cancer in children.
