A medical technology that allows to significantly modernize thyroid surgeries, mitigating their consequences for the voice, has been developed by specialists of Penza State University.
According to Alexander Klimashevich, professor of the Department of Surgery at the PSU Medical Institute, usually when thyroid surgeries are performed, only the recurrent laryngeal nerve is found.
The thinner branch (of the superior laryngeal nerve), responsible for innervation of the epiglottis, is usually overlooked.
"We proposed a variant of finding this nerve, which is thinner than a hair, but allows to preserve the innervation of the epiglottis and vocal cords," the scientist explained in an interview with TASS. - This gives preservation of high tones of voice and work of epiglottis".
The new method has been successfully tested in surgeries and patented. The researchers also suggested using a monopolar stimulator probe with a greater penetration depth during surgeries, along with the already used bipolar probe.
Earlier, Dr. Myasnikov warned that X-rays cause thyroid cancer.
