Excessive consumption of energy drinks can lead to sudden cardiac arrest, the British newspaper Express reported, citing a study by the Anatolian Journal of Cardiology.

The article notes that the drink is dangerous because of the high concentration of caffeine derived from a plant called guarana. Energy drinks contain a double dose of the stimulant. The medics noted that the risk of heart muscle collapse increases when energy drinks are mixed with alcohol.

According to experts, the heart stops due to severe arrhythmia - a pathology that disrupts the frequency, rhythm and consistency of its work. In such a condition, the muscle contracts too quickly, or very slowly.

Doctors from the Mayo Clinic noted that a person with such a problem needs to restore the heart rhythm as quickly as possible to prevent the risk of death.
