European countries increased imports of fertilisers from Russia despite attempts to refuse them. The reason was the energy crisis. This was reported by RIA Novosti, citing data from the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and Eurostat.

Despite the Western sanctions, Russia remains the main exporter of phosphate and potash fertilisers and the leader in nitrogen fertilisers.

In 2022, Russia exported 5 times more fertilisers to the EU, with growth recorded in 2023. Between January and September, it sold 1.8 million tonnes of nitrogen additives, which is 7.6% more than a year earlier.

Germany remains a major buyer of fertilisers from Russia. Imports in the first nine months of 2023 increased 3.2 times (426,300 tonnes) compared to the same period in 2022.

Then comes Poland. The growth was 257.7 thousand tonnes (1.8 times). France purchased 362.4 thousand tonnes (+18.1%), the Netherlands - 163.1 thousand tonnes (+17.7%).

These countries accounted for 2/3 of Russian fertiliser exports to the EU. The Federal Republic of Germany has the largest share - 23.9%. The EU buys potash fertilisers mainly from Russia and Belarus, and 31% of nitrogen fertilisers from Russia alone.

Europe is forced to increase imports from Russia, as it has reduced domestic production due to sanctions and EU countries no longer receive cheap Russian gas.

The EU is thinking about investing in its own production. But Dmitry Tarasov of the Logistics Department at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation believes that against the background of the energy crisis, social and economic crisis, the European Union will have to invest in its own production.

Russia, on the other hand, continues to increase its fertiliser production. Last year it increased by 9% - almost to 60 million tonnes.
