Russia started buying cocoa beans from Turkey in 2023. Imports are estimated at almost $1.8 million. RIA Novosti wrote about it.
Russia bought from Turkey last year more than 600 tonnes of sweet fruits.
The main suppliers of cocoa beans to Russia are Ecuador, Côte d'Ivoire and Estonia.
Estonia exported 7 thousand tonnes of fruit worth $24 million to Russia that year. Cote d'Ivoire and Ecuador (data for 2022) sold 5.1 thousand tonnes for $11 million and 1.1 thousand tonnes for $2.7 million respectively.
The Russian Federation also bought raw materials for chocolate from Belgium, Germany, Colombia, Lithuania, Peru, Poland and the Netherlands.
The exchange value of sweet fruits in early February for the first time since 1977 was 5 thousand dollars.
Less than a week later, the price rose to $5.5 thousand per tonne and broke the record of 47 years ago. Then a new record was set - more than 6 thousand dollars per tonne.
Experts called the cause of this drought in West Africa, the rise in the price of fertilisers and the crisis in the Red Sea.
