Russia is importing less potatoes from Egypt. This has provoked a rise in prices on the market, but soon supplies of young potatoes will start from domestic fields, which will correct the situation. Alexei Krasilnikov, Executive Director of the “Potato Union” told RIA Novosti.
According to him, Egypt supplied Russia in May-June 300-500 thousand tons, but reduced supplies, which led to a certain deficit in the market.
Supplies of domestic potatoes will start in the first half of June from Astrakhan and Krasnodar Krai, Stavropol.
In a number of Russian regions the sown areas of potatoes were reduced due to unprofitability of potatoes. But in many regions the volume has been maintained and there will be no shortage of the vegetable, Krasilnikov said.
The expert has not yet given forecasts for the harvest, as planting work is just being completed.
Potatoes in the country rose in price by 25.6%, according to Rosstat.
