Spain's leftist government intends to increase the minimum wage by another 8 percent, despite resistance from employers, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced Tuesday.

"We are going to approve a new minimum wage increase of 8% to reach 1,080 euros gross per month for 14 months, since the country traditionally pays 14 months' wages, Pedro Sanchez, a Socialist, announced during a debate in the Senate.

"In this way, we fulfill our commitment" to raise the minimum wage "to 60 percent of the average wage" by the end of the legislature in 2023, he continued. Over 12 months, the minimum wage will now be €1,260 gross. The unions, which demanded €1,100 over 14 months, nevertheless expressed their satisfaction.
