Cold starts, driving on congested roads and snowy roads shorten the life cycle of oil. Experts emphasize the importance of seasonal oil changes, especially for drivers whose vehicles are subjected to heavy use in cold regions.

Each cold start reduces engine life, so it is critical to use oil with good characteristics, emphasizes Mikhail Kolodchkin, an expert of Za Rulem magazine.

According to the American classification SAE, the smaller the number before the symbol W in the designation of the oil, the better it is suitable for severe frosts. For example, 0W oil should be able to work at temperatures up to minus 35 ºC, 5W - up to minus 30 ºC, 10W - up to minus 25 ºC.

An important parameter for winter is also the ability of the oil to penetrate through the engine channels under the pressure of the oil pump. If the oil is too viscous and has thickened due to the cold, it will not be able to reach all the contact points. This can lead to engine wear.

However, the choice between 0W, 5W or 10W oils depends on several factors. The region where the vehicle is operated is a key aspect. In the cold regions of the north, oils with 0W index are preferred. Also, these oils are recommended for drivers making short trips in winter.

If the car is constantly kept in a warm garage or driven long distances in the winter, you can get by with 5W40 or 5W30 oils. These options are universal for most regions, but it is also important to consider mileage and engine condition when choosing an oil.
