Ford plans to produce only electric cars in Europe by 2030. The entire lineup on the European market will be electric, and 2/3 of commercial van sales will be all-electric or hybrid.
According to Autonews Europe, the company will retire models that are not profitable. These are the Fiesta hatchback and the Focus compact. The firm will lay off over a thousand employees who are now engaged in production of combustion engines and transmissions in Germany. Headquarters in Europe and the Cologne plant are to be affected by the cuts.
Ford has not yet given any official comments, noting that the transition to the production of electric cars will require significant changes in the work.
The company intends to produce battery electric cars based on Volkswagen Group's MEB platform. The first electric car produced by Ford in Europe is scheduled for release in 2023. It will be a Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback.
