Sales of new cars of all categories in Russia in the first four months of 2025 decreased by 27% compared to the same period of 2024. From January to April, 404 thousand vehicles were sold, including passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, trucks and buses. At the same time, sales of new cars of domestic production amounted to 219 thousand units, which is 9% lower than in the same period last year.
In particular, 346.4 thousand passenger cars were sold during the period, which corresponds to a decrease of 26%. Sales of light commercial vehicles decreased by 16%, amounting to 34 thousand units. Sales of trucks decreased by 49%, reaching 20 thousand, and buses - by 54%, to 3.5 thousand. In addition, almost 3 thousand new electric cars were sold in four months, which is 66% less than last year.
In April this year, the Russian market of new cars also reflected a 27% year-on-year decline, amounting to 116.8 thousand units. However, this figure was 25% higher than in March 2025, indicating some sort of market rebound compared to the previous month.
In April, passenger car sales totaled 101.4 thousand. That's down 25% from April 2024, but up 28% from March of this year. The light commercial vehicle market fell 16% year-over-year to nearly 9.8 thousand units, which was simultaneously 16% higher than March's results. Truck sales totaled 4.6 thousand units, showing a decline of 58% compared to April last year and 5% compared to March. Bus sales were down 52% year-over-year, but up 20% versus March, totaling 1.1 thousand units.
In April, the decline in sales of domestically produced cars was less significant than that of imported models. During the month, 65.2 thousand cars produced in Russia were sold (12% less compared to April 2024), and 51.5 thousand imported cars (a drop of 40%). In general, at the end of January-April 2025, the share of domestic vehicles in the market increased by 10 percentage points compared to the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.
