Specialists have revealed that a new virus from South Africa called NeoCov is able to penetrate cells in the same way as COVID-19. The results of the corresponding study were made public at bioRxiv.
"The occurrence of only one mutation in a key part of its envelope enables this virus to actively penetrate human cells as well," the study said.
According to experts, similar COVID-19 pathogens are present in populations of bats and other wildlife around the world. If contacts between humans and wild animals increase, the pathogens could trigger new pandemics in the future, experts said.
