Japanese scientists in the study of hearing cats found that the animals are able to mentally determine a person's location by their voice alone, reports CNN.

Scientists at Kyoto University examined 50 domestic cats, placing each in a room with two doors and a window, near which speakers were installed. Experts monitored the pets using cameras.

The researchers included recordings of the voices of cat owners and strangers calling animals by name and evaluating responses. It turned out that the cats did not react much when the sound came from one speaker. But when the owner's voice sounded first from one speaker, and a few seconds later from the second, the cats showed signs of great surprise.

Scientists believe that whiskered pets are able to mentally track the location of a person by his voice, so they are surprised when their owners suddenly "teleported" to another place. According to one of the authors of the study, Saho Takagi, this indicates a high level of intelligence of cats.
