Future Prime Minister of Japan spoke about Kurils and relations with Russia

Japan will continue negotiations with Russia about a peace treaty while addressing the issue of belonging to all the islands of the southern part of the Kuril Islands. This was announced by the new head of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Yoshihide Suga, who will be appointed as the country's new prime minister on September 16.

"As for the northern territories, we will continue negotiations in order to clarify the ownership of all four islands," said the future prime minister.

Suga noted that his predecessor Shinzo Abe was able to establish trust relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

We remind that Moscow and Tokyo have been trying to develop a peace treaty following the results of World War II for many decades. However, the main obstacle in this matter is disagreement over the ownership of the southern part of the Kuril Islands. Japan still disputes the ownership of Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and a group of adjacent small uninhabited islands.
