Malta's own draft humanitarian resolution on the Middle East was adopted by 12 countries. Three countries abstained in the vote. They are the United States, Russia and the United Kingdom.
At the UN Security Council meeting, Russia's amendment to Malta's draft on a humanitarian truce in the Gaza Strip was not adopted.
Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya noted that it is impossible to carry out humanitarian actions if there is no ceasefire. That is why Russia suggested adding a call for an immediate truce and cessation of hostilities to the draft resolution.
"Any humanitarian action requires an immediate cessation of hostilities. Under fire, it is impossible to clear rubble, to evacuate people, it is impossible to bring in much-needed fuel, without which Gaza hospitals are about to run out of electricity," Nebenzya said.
Besides Russia, four other countries voted in favor of the Russian amendment: Brazil, China, UAE and Mozambique. The United States opposed the amendment. Nine states abstained. Thus, the Russian amendment calling for a ceasefire to the Middle East resolution was rejected.
Malta's resolution aimed at helping children in Gaza and calling for a humanitarian pause was adopted.
