Two leaders of the jihadist group Islamic State (IS) were killed in a raid by U.S. forces in eastern Syria, the U.S. military's Middle East Command said Sunday. In a statement, Centcom said its forces "successfully conducted a helicopter raid in eastern Syria" at dawn, killing "two leaders of the Islamic State organization."
One was identified as Anas, a leader of the group in Syria "who was involved in planning bloody operations" in eastern Syria. The statement did not give details of the second. "Initial estimates are that there are no civilian casualties," the statement said, which stressed the U.S. commitment to combat the extremist organization's threat "in partnership with local forces."
According to Rami Abdel Rahmana, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the operation was carried out in cooperation with elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces in the village of al-Zor in Deir ez-Zor province.
