According to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Romania, Lucian Bode, since January 8 wearing a cloth mask is equated to its absence and is punishable by a fine of about $570, RIA Novosti reports.

As Bode said on Digi 24 television, experts are reporting a very rapid spread of the omicron strain of coronavirus. This variant is highly contagious, so wearing a mask is very important to stop the spread of covid. As of Jan. 8, all Romanian residents over the age of 5 are required to wear surgical protective masks or FFP2-type masks in public places.

According to the minister, police and gendarmes will monitor compliance with safety standards.
