The diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics, according to French President Emmanuel Macron, is a symbolic and too insignificant measure, since the countries that announced the boycott will send their athletes to the competition anyway.
Initially, the boycott was announced by the United States on the grounds that China violates human rights in the province of Xinjiang - Washington calls what is happening there genocide. Australia also joined the boycott. At the same time, Australian and American athletes will still be able to participate in the games, but no officials of these two countries will be present at the competitions.
According to Macron, it is necessary to either completely boycott these Olympic Games or fully participate in them.
Macron also said there was no need to "politicize" the Olympics. The Chinese Foreign Ministry called for the same.
