Scientists have discovered the remains of a large number of people in the Russian courtyard in the city of Jerusalem. Specialists believe that all of these people were victims of the massacre, a total of 124 people. The incident took place at the end of the II-beginning of the I century BC. It was during the reign of King Alexander Jannaeus. The article was published in the International Journal of Osteoarchaeology.

Anthropologists have noted that the Hasmonean dynasty often used violence to resolve conflict situations. But so far no clear evidence of this has been found. During the excavations also revealed the cremated remains of at least 32 people who lived in the middle of the first century BC.

During the study of remains specialists found evidence of trauma from blows with sharp and blunt objects, there were also observed fractures of bones obtained after death. Sixteen people were found decapitated. At this point, the people were either motionless or dead.
