Japanese experts from Yokohama State University have presented a battery that uses water instead of the traditional electrolyte.
According to the developers, in the future the system will make it possible to develop safe batteries that are resistant to spontaneous combustion. Target areas for the new technology are wind turbines, solar panels and urban electric vehicles.
“We now have safer, longer-lasting batteries that we expect to be put into practice, albeit with less voltage,” said Naoaki Yabuuchi, a chemistry professor at Yokohama State University, one of the study participants.
Scientists have proposed using new generation batteries in combination with renewable energy sources - to store energy generated from solar panels and wind turbines. According to them, in such conditions, lithium-ion batteries on water will not be inferior to conventional battery packs.
